For all y'all who haven't lived in Texas before get ready to hear the best story of your life.
The bugs here in Texas are three things - dis, gus, and ting (Disgusting). They're even worse when you only have one companion in the trio who can handle killing the critters (sorry but that's not me). One night we walked into the house around 9:00 pm after a good days work. We put the bags down, kicked the shoes off, flipped the light on and we immediately took shelter on top of our high chairs in the kitchen. A filthy, 2 inch, no good cockroach scurried across the floor. Nu uh Mother Nature.....low blow to the sisters. Not sure what to do, we waddled in place, jazz hands about as we screamed. The nasty roach went under our stove. We didn't know what to do! It was getting late, and sitting frozen on top of our chairs did not help, so we decided to continue planning. Shortly after ANOTHER MONSTER OF A COCKROACH came out of our vent and went on top of the cupboards (haha)! We set some honey on a napkin out, hoping the scent would lure them out and that they'd stick to the honey. For extra measure, Sister Newman got her bed bug spray and we sprayed on top of the cupboards and under the stove (thank you Sister Newman's dad for making her get that). We sat......nothing happened. We went to bed three scared sisters that night. Sister Shepherd and Sister Newman were in the bathroom the following morning when they heard sister Mann (me), scream from downstairs. My two companions, eyes wide, looked at each other and ran downstairs, Sister Newman with her sandal in her hand. We found the ugly buggers on their backs on the tile. We got the hairspray and stiffed em up real nice to help them kick the bucket fast (thanks for showing me this technique Camille Thompson). The death report for the sisters condo that morning was sisters- 0, bugs- 2. Our garbage was a couple of satisfying grams heavier by the end of the day. A sisters gotta do what a sisters gotta do. Well that's the story for y'all this week. Off to talking about the amazing miracle that happened!! My companions and I were contacting a referral that we had been given and we were so excited to go and talk to. Sadly no one was home. As we walked away we had the feeling to go knock on their next door neighbor's door (this was at an apartment complex). A young man answered the door and said his name was Jarardo and he invited us in. We began talking to him and he told us that he moved here not too long ago to find a job. As we began talking he became really interested. Then a miracle happened! We taught him the restoration and invited him to be baptized. He said YES!! He told us he wants to be clean and change his life around and become a better person! If he continues to progress we hope that he will be baptized on May 28th! It was such an awesome experience and the spirit was so strong! The gift of tongues is real! During that lesson the words were just flowing out of my mouth and it was awesome!! This week has been a test of patience, hope, and faith but as I relied on the plan that our Heavenly Father has in store for these people I was able to gain a better understanding on these things. I know God has a plan for us! He is with us always! I recently was studying in Alma 32 and that whole chapter talks about faith. It explains how faith is not a perfect knowledge, you have to believe. In another talk by Elder Holland "Lord I Believe" he tells a story about a little boy who told him that he didn't know if the church was true but he believed it to be true. Elder Holland goes on to explain how "belief is a precious word, an even more precious act, and he need never apologize for “only believing." In Mark 5:36 Christ tells us to "be not afraid, only believe." Sometimes all we can do is believe, and sometimes all we can do is have a desire to believe. And as Alma continues to explain in Alma 32 - let that desire work in you until you do believe. This week I really saw the blessings that come from believing in myself, but most of all I saw the blessings that came from believing in my Heavenly Father. I Love you all. I know with all my heart that this church is true!! I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and that it contains the fullness of this gospel. I know that if you read it and pray about it you will know of it's truthfulness! We are not perfect but through the Atonement of Jesus Christ we can strive to be better each and every day!
