Howdy family and friends!

Howdy Y'all!!

This week has been super busy and full of adventures and many great
experiences!  We changed our P-Day this week to today because
yesterday we were given the wonderful opportunity to go do service and
help those people in Austin who's homes were affected by the flooding!
It was lots of hard work but it was so good to see these families
smile when they saw how many people were there to help them.  We spent
almost all day down there and it was so worth it!!
This past week started out great!  We were visiting one of our part
member families and when we left their home we were walking back to
our car and I saw a man in his garage playing his guitar.  I told my
companions that we should go talk to him.  When we approached him he
didn't really want to talk to us but then I told him I loved playing
the guitar.  He smiled and asked if I would play him a song.  He handed
me his guitar and I started playing and then he just started singing
to the music I was playing.  His voice was amazing and he sounded like
a natural country singer!  It turned out to be so fun and it touched
my heart to see him smile and excited while we were jamming together.
We then talked for a little while, and as we talked he began to open up
to us more about himself.  He used to be in a band in
Nashville Tennessee and he came to Texas a couple years ago.  He had
been approached by missionaries before but was never really interested
on what they had to say.  He said there was something about us that
made him feel like he needed to listen (MIRACLE).  We taught him the
restoration and gave him a Book of Mormon.  We left him with a prayer
and he had a smile on his face!
Throughout the week I was able to experience miracles like that.  On
Wednesday we had Zone Conference and our Mission President and his
family came and spoke to us, and gave us some advice because they are
leaving in a couple weeks and we will be getting a new Mission
President soon (President Polley).  It will be exciting to receive a new
Mission President and I can't wait to meet his family!  This Zone
conference was amazing and I learned a lot!  Later that day some of us
missionaries in our area got to set up a booth at the Amistad Festival!
There was a big Mexican dance competition and lots of things going on
during that outside, and we got to be apart of it!  We met a lot of
great people there and even some amazing members!  Last night we had
family night with the Solano family (Our Branch Mission Leader).  It was a lot of
fun and we had some of our investigators there!  We watched the 20 minute
restoration video and played some gospel related games!
I would like to share with y'all something I learned in the Zone
Conference.  As missionaries we have been studying this
Be Not Moved packet, which has been one of the best studies I've ever
had, and I've learned so much from it.  Well at the Zone Conference we
had a discussion on it!  Something that has really stood out to me was
one of the talks that was given that I reread.  It was a General
Conference talk given by Douglas L. Callister back in October 2007
called Knowing That We Know.  This is some of what it said in that talk;
"Years  ago  a  man  was  accused  of  a  serious  crime. The
prosecution  presented  three  witnesses, each of whom saw the
man commit the crime.  The defense then presented three
witnesses, none of whom had seen its commission.  The  simple
jury was  confused.  Based on the number of witnesses, the
evidence seemed to the jury equaly  divided. The man was acquitted.
It was irrelevant, of course, that untold milions had never seen
the crime.  There needed to be only one witness.
In the genius of the gospel plan, there ultimately only has
to be one witness, but that witness must be you.  The
testimony of others may initiate and nourish the desire for
faith and testimony,  but eventually every individual must find
out for himself.  None can permanently  endure on borrowed light.
The restored gospe  is not truer today than when a solitary
boy walked out of the Sacred Grove in 1820.  Truth has never
been dependent on the number who embrace it.  When Joseph left
the grove, there was only one man on earth who knew the
truth  about  God  the  Father and His Son,  Jesus Christ.  It is
necessary,  however,  that each find out for himself and carry
that burning testimony into the next life."

"When the 23-year-old Heber J. Grant was installed as pPresident of the
Tooele Stake, he told the Saints he believed the gospel was true.
President Joseph F. Smith, a counselor in the First Presidency,
inquired, “Heber, you said you believe the gospel with all your heart,
… but you did not bear your testimony that you know it is true. Don’t
you know absolutely that this gospel is true?”  Heber answered, “I do
not.” Joseph F. Smith then turned to John Taylor, the President of the
Church, and said, “I am in favor of undoing this afternoon what we did
this morning. I do not think any man should preside over a stake who
has not a perfect and abiding knowledge of the divinity of this work.”
President Taylor replied, “Joseph, Joseph, Joseph, [Heber] knows it
just as well as you do. The only thing that he does not know is that
he does know it.”  Within a few weeks that testimony was realized, and
young Heber J. Grant shed tears of gratitude for the perfect, abiding,
and absolute testimony that came into his life.  It is a grand thing
to know--and to know that you know and that the light has not been
borrowed from another."

"Years ago I presided over a mission headquartered in the Midwest. One
day, with a handful of our missionaries, I spoke with an esteemed
representative of another Christian faith. This gentle soul spoke of
his own religion’s history and doctrine, eventually repeating the
familiar words: “By grace ye are saved. Every man and woman must
exercise faith in Christ in order to become a saved being.”  Among
those present was a new missionary. He was altogether unfamiliar with
other religions. He had to ask the question, “But, sir, what happens
to the little baby who dies before he is old enough to understand and
exercise faith in Christ?” The learned man bowed his head, looked at
the floor, and said, “There ought to be an exception. There ought to
be a loophole. There ought to be a way, but there isn’t.”  The
missionary looked at me and, with tears in his eyes, said, “Goodness,
President, we do have the truth, don’t we!”  The moment of testimony
realization--when you know that you know--is sweet and sublime. That
testimony, if nurtured, will rest upon you as a mantle. When we see
light, we are engulfed by it. Lights of understanding turn on within.
I once conversed with a fine young man who was not of our faith,
although he had attended most of our worship services for more than a
year. I asked why he had not joined the Church. He replied, “Because I
do not know whether it is true. I think it may well be true, but I
cannot stand and testify, as you do, ‘I actually know it is true.’”  I
inquired, “Have you read the Book of Mormon?” He answered that he had
read in the book.  I asked whether he had prayed about the book. He
answered, “I have mentioned it in my prayers.”  I told my friend that
as long as he casually read and prayed, he never would find out,
worlds without end. But when he set aside a period for fasting and
pleading, the truth would be burned into his heart, and he would know
that he knew. He said nothing more to me but told his wife the next
morning that he would be fasting. The following Saturday he was
baptized."  "If you want to know that you know that you know, a price must be
paid. And you alone must pay that price. There are proxies for
ordinances, but none for the acquisition of a testimony."

I know that was a lot of it, but I loved reading through this talk and it made
me wonder....do I know that I know that these things that I am
preaching to these people are true?....
Alma spoke of his conversion saying this, “I have fasted and prayed
many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know
of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest
unto me” (Alma 5:46).
Being on a mission has helped me realize the testimony
that I have!  I know that I know that Joseph Smith was
called of God to be a prophet!  I know he restored this everlasting
and true gospel on the earth today!  I know that the Book of Mormon is
true!  I know without a doubt that God loves each and every one of us!
I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer.  I know when He
was in the Garden of Gethsemane He saw each and every one of us.  He
saw our strengths and our weaknesses, and our shortcomings and still
thought that we were worth it!  I know this gospel is true with all my
heart!  I know we are all God's children and that He has a plan for
each and every one of us!!  I love love love being a missionary and I
hope y'all have a great week!

What an AWESOME week!!!

Howdy y'all!

This week was amazing!  Miracles happened every day!  I would like to
start off by sharing an experience I had on Wednesday. I went on an
exchange with Hermana Feldman in the McNeil ASL area, and I was so
excited to get to use my sign language throughout the day in the
lessons that we had etc. But when we were out trying to contact
someone that lived in the area that was deaf, we knocked on a door and
a Spanish man answered.  I got so nervous realizing at that time I was
the only one out of the two of us that could speak Spanish, and I
wasn't really expecting to speak any Spanish while on this exchange...
but oh it was amazing!  I just started speaking and the Spanish was
just coming out of my mouth, and I could also understand everything that he
was saying. I was able to teach him!  I needed that experience this
week.  I know now that I can speak Spanish I just need to trust that I
can do it (believe in myself) with the Lords help, and also with
the Spirit there to testify to them that what I am saying is true.
The gift of tongues is REAL!

This week I was reading a General Conference talk by Thomas S. Monson called
"Charity Never Faileth".  I love the section in the talk when he says this, "I begin with a
short anecdote which illustrates a point I should like to make.  A young couple,
Lisa and John, moved into a new neighborhood. One morning while they were
eating breakfast, Lisa looked out the window and watched her next-door neighbor
hanging out her wash.  “That laundry’s not clean!” Lisa exclaimed. “Our neighbor
doesn’t know how to get clothes clean!”  John looked on but remained
silent.  Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, Lisa
would make the same comments.  A few weeks later Lisa was surprised to
glance out her window and see a nice, clean wash hanging in her
neighbor’s yard. She said to her husband, “Look, John--she’s finally
learned how to wash correctly! I wonder how she did it.”  John
replied, “Well, dear, I have the answer for you. You’ll be interested
to know that I got up early this morning and washed our windows!”
Tonight I’d like to share with you a few thoughts concerning how we
view each other. Are we looking through a window which needs cleaning?
Are we making judgments when we don’t have all the facts? What do we
see when we look at others? What judgments do we make about them?
Said the Savior, “Judge not.” He continued, “Why beholdest thou the
mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that
is in thine own eye?” Or, to paraphrase, why beholdest thou what you
think is dirty laundry at your neighbor’s house but considerest not
the soiled window in your own house?  None of us is perfect. I know of
no one who would profess to be so. And yet for some reason, despite
our own imperfections, we have a tendency to point out those of
others. We make judgments concerning their actions or inactions.
There is really no way we can know the heart, the intentions, or the
circumstances of someone who might say or do something we find reason
to criticize. Thus the commandment: “Judge not.”

I have been working on the Christ like Attribute Charity this month. I
have thought about this question... What is charity?  The prophet
Mormon teaches us that “charity is the pure love of Christ.”  In
Preach My Gospel it states that Charity is God’s eternal love for all
His children. We are to seek to develop that kind of love. When you
are filled with charity, you obey God’s commandments and do all you
can to serve others and help them receive the restored gospel. Thomas
S. Monson said, "I consider charity--or “the pure love of Christ”--to be
the opposite of criticism and judging."  As I have focused on not
judging but loving everyone, I have come to love more fully with all my
heart for these people.  Everyone is a son or daughter of God.  I
challenge all of you to see the good in people and to love everyone
more fully. As you do so your love for everyone will increase.  On
Wednesday I gave a training in our district meeting that went really
well. I really applied what I was learning in my every day
missionary work last week and I have found a difference.  I gave a
training on "teaching when you find and finding when you teach."  I
studied some of the chapters in Preach My Gospel on this topic and
read some conference talks etc, and it was amazing how much I learned
and then applied, and then saw the results from "teaching when you find
and finding when you teach."  In chapter 9 of PMG it says..."the Lord
is preparing people to receive you and the restored gospel. He will
lead you to them or He will lead them to you."  I believe this to be
true.  I know that there are people who are prepared right now in
their lives!  The Lord loves every person who might hear his message
and He knows the hearts and circumstances of each one. He knows what
correction, what encouragement, and what gospel truth will best help
each person to choose his or her way along the path to eternal life.
I have a testimony of the restoration of this gospel.  Joseph Smith
was called of God to restore this everlasting and true gospel in these
last days.  Through diligent study and prayer and the many wonderful
experiences that I've had my testimony has grown so much.  I know this
church is true.  I will not deny it!  I have a testimony that Jesus
Christ is the son of God.  He is our Savior and Redeemer. I will
continue to have faith as I go about this week and know that I will
see miracles!
I love y'all so very much!  Have a great week!

Adventure is out there!!

Hola!!

This week has been super busy but so wonderful!!

I met Prince Charming y'all! He is not tall, dark, and handsome, he
didn't present himself with a bouquet of flowers in hand, but he was
quite the catch- green skin, warts n all (for those who are confused
still and worried that an actual man was at our house... We are
talking about a frog here). We were coming home late after a day's
work. The headlights of the car shown on the driveway, right on that
handsome fella. I yelled at Sister Shepherd to stop the car as Sister
Newman and I jumped out. We carefully approached him, tip toe-ing
over.  Sister Shepherd was cheering us on as we tried chasing him
around for a couple minutes, freaking out a little bit whenever we
would come close to picking him up. I ran into the house and got a
members tuberware to catch em (told ya he was quite the catch). I put
the plastic bowl over the green guy just as he started hopping away
again. Sister Newman and I laughed so hard watching a white plastic
bowl bounce away instead of a frog with legs. Once in the bowl, Sister
Newman gathered up the courage to finally hold Prince Charming. She
screamed as she touched it's rough scaly skin to hold it. Sister Mann
(Me) was filming me as she told me "hurry and take the picture hurry
and take the picture!" I continued to film for what felt like a
dispensation (Sister Newmans words) until I finally agreed to take a
picture for her. We then had to find good lighting (another
dispensations wait). Haven't seen Prince Charming around since, but
he's out there somewhere.  Well thats my story for y'all this week.
We've really had many great things happen this week! We did lots of
service at the Round Rock Service Center and it was great!  We helped
them organize all the books they received from donations and then
helped organize and put out clothes and food!  We had more adventures
with cockroaches this week!!  They really are some pretty nasty
buggers. We had some amazing lessons with our investigators this week.
We taught Herminio and he prayed with us and in his pray he asked if
this was the pathway that he should go and asked if this really was
the true church and he began to cry.  After the prayer we all sat
there for a minute and he said he felt the spirit tell him to keep
meeting with us and he said that he prayed the other day and he knows
the Book of Mormon is true!  He shared with us different parts and
stories in the Book of Mormon that he really liked and it was just
awesome to see him light up when talking with us about it. I truly
believe with all my heart that god knows all of his children and he
loves us all so much no matter what! He answers prayers!  We just need
to get down on our knees and ask!  This week I've seen many miracles
and people accept the gospel in there lives.  I know that people are
being prepared right now for us to go and teach them!  I love this
gospel with all my heart!  I know that Joseph Smith was called of God
to restore this gospel in this last dispensation. Jesus Christ is our
Savior and he loves us so much and because he died for us we can be
forgiven of our sins.  I love this great opportunity that I have of
being a missionary out here in the wonderful state of TEXAS! It truly
is the best!  I love you all and hope y'all have an amazing week!

Month 3!!!

Hola Y'all!
Tomorrow will be three months on the mission!  It's so crazy how time
flies!  It's been the best three months so far!  I hope to all you
mothers that y'all had a wonderful Mother's Day yesterday!  Mothers
are the best and I sure do love and appreciate all that my mom does
for me and I love and appreciate all of you. I challenge all the moms
to look up the video #itwasmom.  It really touched me and I hope
it does you as well.  Luckily this week we haven't had to many encounters with
bugs (hehe). The weather has been holding up this week but it's been
pretty humid.  We've been riding our bikes a lot which has been so
awesome because we've talked to so many people!  This week was Cinco De
Mayo, which is a big fiesta for the Mexican culture!  We biked a lot
that day and talked to so many people and miracles happened!  The Lord
really does know His children and what they need. That night we had a
fiesta with our branch and we invited our investigators!  All of them
had so much fun and they made lots of friends within the people in our
branch!  We ate lots of yummy Mexican food and both us and the elders sang
them a song.....and I think we sounded great!  At the beginning of the
week we taught our 2 investigators, Jerardo and Herminio.  They are
both just so amazing and really looking for a change in there lives.
They both have so much faith and it's just amazing to see how much
they are coming to know there Heavenly Father and His son Jesus
Christ.  This week I have been studying more about these questions,
"Why is the Book of Mormon so important in our conversion?", and "Why do we
need it if we already have the Bible?"  I was reading a talk from Tad
R. Callister from the October 2011 General Conference titled "The Book
of Mormon - a Book from God". This is what it says in this talk.....why is
the  Book  of  Mormon so  essential if  we already  have  the  Bible
to  teach  us  about  Jesus Christ?  Have  you  ever  wondered  why
there  are  so many  Christian  churches  in  the  world  today  when
they obtain their doctrines from essentially  the same  Bible?  It  is
because  they  interpret  the  Bible differently.  If  they
interpreted  it  the  same,  they would  be  the  same  church.  This
is  not  a  condition the  Lord  desires,  for  the  Apostle  Paul
declared that  there  is  “one  Lord,  one  faith,  one  baptism”
(Ephesians  4:5).  To  help  bring  this  oneness  about, the  Lord
established  a  divine  law  of  witnesses.  Paul  taught,  “In  the
mouth  of  two  or  three witnesses shall  every  word  be
established”  (2 Corinthians  13:1). The  Bible  is  one  witness  of
Jesus  Christ;  the  Book of  Mormon  is  another.  Why  is  this
second  witness so crucial?  The following illustration  may  help: How
many  straight  lines  can  you  draw  through  a single  point  on  a
piece  of  paper?  The  answer  is infinite.  For  a  moment,
suppose  that  single  point represents  the  Bible  and  that
hundreds  of  those straight  lines  drawn  through  that  point
represent different  interpretations  of  the  Bible  and  that  each
of  those  interpretations  represents  a  different church. What
happens,  however,  if  on  that  piece  of  paper there  is  a
second  point  representing  the  Book  of Mormon?  How  many
straight  lines  could  you draw  between  these  two  reference
points:  the Bible  and  the  Book  of  Mormon?  Only  one.  Only one
interpretation  of  Christ’s  doctrines  survives the  testimony  of
these  two  witnesses.  Again  and  again  the  Book  of  Mormon  acts
as  a confirming,  clarifying,  unifying  witness  of  the doctrines
taught  in  the  Bible  so  that  there  is  only “one  Lord,  one
faith,  one  baptism.”
I Know the Book of Mormon is true.  I have read it and I continually read it often.
I know that the Book of Mormon is essential to our own conversion
because without reading, pondering, and praying about it we can't truly gain a
testimony.  I know that we need both the Book of Mormon and the Bible to go
hand in hand with each other and that both testify of our Savior Jesus Christ.
I know that the Book of Mormon contains the fullness of this everlasting
gospel and that Joseph Smith was a prophet Called of God in
this last dispensation. I love love love being able to share this
message with everyone!  I have come to love these people so much and I
know that we are all children of our loving Heavenly Father.  He knows
us better then we know ourselves.  Pray to Him often and I know He is
listening and that He will answer your prayers.  This past week has
been amazing and I can't wait for the week ahead. I love you all so
much and hope y'all have a great week!

TEXAS IS THE BEST!

For all y'all who haven't lived in Texas before get ready to hear the best story of your life.
The bugs here in Texas are three things - dis, gus, and ting (Disgusting). They're even worse when you only have one companion in the trio who can handle killing the critters (sorry but that's not me).  One night we walked into the house around 9:00 pm after a good days work.  We put the bags down, kicked the shoes off, flipped the light on and we immediately took shelter on top of our high chairs in the kitchen.  A filthy, 2 inch, no good cockroach scurried across the floor.  Nu uh Mother Nature.....low blow to the sisters.  Not sure what to do, we waddled in place, jazz hands about as we screamed.  The nasty roach went under our stove. We didn't know what to do!  It was getting late, and sitting frozen on top of our chairs did not help, so we decided to continue planning.  Shortly after ANOTHER MONSTER OF A COCKROACH came out of our vent and went on top of the cupboards (haha)!  We set some honey on a napkin out, hoping the scent would lure them out and that they'd stick to the honey.  For extra measure, Sister Newman got her bed bug spray and we sprayed on top of the cupboards and under the stove (thank you Sister Newman's dad for making her get that).  We sat......nothing happened.  We went to bed three scared sisters that night. Sister Shepherd and Sister Newman were in the bathroom the following morning when they heard sister Mann (me), scream from downstairs.  My two companions, eyes wide, looked at each other and ran downstairs, Sister Newman with her sandal in her hand.  We found the ugly buggers on their backs on the tile.  We got the hairspray and stiffed em up real nice to help them kick the bucket fast (thanks for showing me this technique Camille Thompson). The death report for the sisters condo that morning was sisters- 0, bugs- 2.  Our garbage was a couple of satisfying grams heavier by the end of the day.  A sisters gotta do what a sisters gotta do. Well that's the story for y'all this week.  Off to talking about the amazing miracle that happened!!  My companions and I were contacting a referral that we had been given and we were so excited to go and talk to.  Sadly no one was home.  As we walked away we had the feeling to go knock on their next door neighbor's door (this was at an apartment complex).  A young man answered the door and said his name was Jarardo and he invited us in.  We began talking to him and he told us that he moved here not too long ago to find a job.  As we began talking he became really interested. Then a miracle happened!   We taught him the restoration and invited him to be baptized.  He said YES!!  He told us he wants to be clean and change his life around and become a better person!  If he continues to progress we hope that he will be baptized on May 28th!  It was such an awesome experience and the spirit was so strong!  The gift of tongues is real!  During that lesson the words were just flowing out of my mouth and it was awesome!!  This week has been a test of patience, hope, and faith but as I relied on the plan that our Heavenly Father has in store for these people I was able to gain a better understanding on these things.  I know God has a plan for us!  He is with us always!  I recently was studying in Alma 32 and that whole chapter talks about faith.  It explains how faith is not a perfect knowledge, you have to believe. In another talk by Elder Holland "Lord I Believe" he tells a story about a little boy who told him that he didn't know if the church was true but he believed it to be true. Elder Holland goes on to explain how "belief is a precious word, an even more precious act, and he need never apologize for “only believing." In Mark 5:36 Christ tells us to "be not afraid, only believe." Sometimes all we can do is believe, and sometimes all we can do is have a desire to believe. And as Alma continues to explain in Alma 32 - let that desire work in you until you do believe. This week I really saw the blessings that come from believing in myself, but most of all I saw the blessings that came from believing in my Heavenly Father.  I Love you all.  I know with all my heart that this church is true!!  I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and that it contains the fullness of this gospel.  I know that if you read it and pray about it you will know of it's truthfulness!  We are not perfect but through the Atonement of Jesus Christ we can strive to be better each and every day!
Hope y'all have a great week!

Hermana Mann
